SCMA Hosts Underwater Photogrammetry Workshop Focusing on Marine Archaeology and Marine Biology
From June 3-8, 2024, the SCMA hosted a workshop on underwater photogrammetry. We were fortunate to be able to bring Dr. Kotaro Yamafune out to San Diego to teach students and faculty from the SCMA, SIO, and Diving With a Purpose. Over the 6 days, the participants learned hands on and computer based workflows for successful 3D documentation of submerged cultural and biological material. We were also happy for students to be able to visit the WAVE lab with SCMA Associate Director Dominique Rissolo to see how 3D data can be visualized and analyzed after collection. The workshop wrapped up with a pool day where SCMA faculty and grad students set up a mock archaeological site for the students to practice their skills with underwater cameras.
During the workshop, students and staff were also treated to some guest lectures from visiting colleagues Erica Nocerino, Fabio Menna, and Alessio Calantropio from the University of Sassari and our own Scott McAvoy covering their recent research in geomatics and photogrammetry.
The SCMA would like to thank the SCUBA DIVERsity Program at SIO for their support in bringing Phillip Ogbonna to San Diego as part of our ongoing institutional collaboration with Diving with a Purpose. We are happy to continue our educational and research collaborations with these amazing programs!
