Scripps' Small Boating Program

The Scientific Boating Program at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego provides resources and training to enable researchers to safely conduct work on the water utilizing small craft, which include vessels up to 65’ in length. The program’s focus is to provide boat handling and other field training for students, researchers and staff; maintain shared use boats; and charter the R/V Bob and Betty Beyster for research use.

The course targets professionals in the field of underwater or maritime archaeology, conservation and protection.

Coming soon: Photogrammetry and Visual Analytics

Photogrammetry allows archaeologists to record information in great detail, while leaving submerged heritage in situ for future study, and it allows the non-diving public to experience underwater cultural heritage without needing to physically visit the site. In archaeological practice, 3D models give archaeologists the ability to extract data from sites and artifacts as new questions arise, without the need to make repeat visits to a physical location.
